In the midst of the Napoleonic Wars, Captain Jack Aubrey is sent on a mission to defeat the French privateer Acheron, and for it, he prepares his vessel, the H.M.S. Surprise. But Aubrey quickly learns that the winds are against him, as the Acheron proves itself to be a larger and faster ship than his own. Despite hesitation from his crew and mates, Aubrey becomes single-minded in his pursuit as he conceives of unique ways to gain an advantage over his adversary.
