Chloe's father, Dad, tells her that they can't ever leave the house because the world is too dangerous for them. He keeps the windows boarded up. He has a gun. He tells Chloe repeatedly to stay inside and not look out. On the TV, a newscaster talks about a threat to humanity known only as the freaks. The newscaster claims that they're dangerous and shouldn't be allowed to live near normal people. Dad, seemingly paranoid, repeats his warnings and explains to Chloe that the dangerous people look just like them. Sometimes Chloe hears an ice cream truck. One day, tired of staying indoors, she leaves and speaks to the owner, Mr. Snowcone. Chloe's life is changed forever by what she learns from him.
